In February of 2019, I had it on my heart to create a phone case for the store with the words “You Are Beautiful” across the back. My idea was that if I took a picture of someone, that is what they would see.
In June 2019, children’s author, Yolanda Pigatt, asked me to help write a song that told people “You Are Beautiful,” I looked down at my phone on the table next to me and knew that this was exactly what I needed to do.
Yolanda had the idea, originally. As an adult, she is affected by Alopecia. It’s an autoimmune disease that attacks the hair follicles. There is no known cure and can affect people at all ages.
She wrote this children’s book to raise awareness for the disease. Also, to give children who are affected a story about themselves and to help other children understand more about it.
I loved what she was doing. But what really sealed the deal was that she had a vision to involve other kids and mentioned Down Syndrome. She didn’t know but you probably do, that my sister, Marisa, has Down Syndrome. In that moment, I could just see how she would love to dance along to a song like what Yolanda wanted to write.
Over the next two days, Lennon, Haley, and I took Yolanda’s ideas and I really believe we created something special. Not every custom song makes it on my setlist but I knew that this one had a place.
Marisa, has been involved with Sharing Down Syndrome Arizona most of her life and by extension, so have I. This was the first time I was able to perform at their annual charity walk at Tempe Diablo Stadium in Arizona.
So, here is that moment I saw in mind on that day.
